Bluffton took home two championships at the ultra competitive Van Buren Invitational on their way to a sixth place team finish. Dustin Brinkman won the 125 class and Tyler Rayl took the 145 class. Ryan Johnston lost in the championship round of 103 and Zach Wilson fell in the 130 final. Logan Sturgill took third in the 189 class and Ben Moser salvaged a fifth place finish at 189.
Brinkman breezed to the semifinals and then squeaked out a 3-2 win over Mathias Klausing (O-G). Dustin got a reversal with 24 seconds left in overtime to grab a 8-6 win in the championship match over Aaron Merschman from Delphos St John’s. Tyler Rayl had no adversity until the finals. After getting an initial takedown, Rayl was driven to the mat by an illegal takedown. Tyler was unable to continue with the match and was awarded a win by disqualification of Seneca East’s Taylor Hoepf.
Ryan Johnston was oh so close to victory in the 103 match but lost with just one second left on a reversal by Carey’s Brayden Liest. Zach Wilson lost the 130 final 10-7 to McComb senior Chris Osborne.
Allen East won the event followed by McComb.
