"Quick guys get tired; big guys don't shrink." ~Marv Hashman, Univ. of Washington head coach
Coach Hashman was right on the money when he spoke those words and Wapakoneta coach Rusty Allen would undoubtedly agree with him. The Redskins duo of 6’3” Morgan Quelhorst and 6’0” Heidi Schlegel proved to be a tall mountain to climb. The two clogged the lane on defense and proved to be formidable on offense as well, combining for 37 points leading Wapakoneta to a 65-32 victory. Bluffton is now 4-9.
The game wasn’t out of reach until the end though. After Jaime Lugibihl swished a ‘3’ to open the scoring Wapak, the defending Division II state runner up, answered with a 12-0 run. The Redskins extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring Bluffton 16-7. Lydia Guagenti nailed a 30 foot three point heave at the buzzer to cut the lead to 28-12.
Bluffton packed the lane with a 2-3 zone in the second half to combat the big girls. Midway through the third, Guagenti and Mariah Welch combined for a 9-2 run, whittling the lead down to 38-25 with 1:49 left in the quarter. Then the Redskins took off again, outscoring BHS 17-0 over the next six minutes. Sami Harrod, who drained four from long distance, ended the spurt with a ‘3’ late in the fourth but the damage had been done.
Harrod’s 12 markers led the Pirates. Guagenti and Welch each contributed 7 to the cause and Lugibihl and Molly Lengyel both scored 3. Bluffton shot well from outside the arc, draining 6 of 13 attempts. Wapak took the JV contest 68-20 .
