Basketball (M): Pirates Stand Tall

Published Date: 2009-01-06 22:47:23
The Garrick Sherman Show rolled into the Treasure Chest Tuesday night as the Pirates faced their second consecutive Western Buckeye League opponent.  Sherman was held in check by a unique Pirate defense but Kenton still prevailed 54-47.  It was the second straight defeat for BHS, dropping their record to 5-3.  Kenton improved to 6-2 with the win.

Sherman, a 6’10” senior, has accepted a basketball scholarship to Michigan State.  Bluffton threw a new look at the big man, double teaming him the entire night regardless of where the ball was on the floor.  The result was holding Sherman to 12 points, 14 points under his average, on just four field goals.  Kenton appeared confused at times but eventually figured out a game plan.  This double team created an open player somewhere on the court and Kenton adapted by launching 26 threes, making seven.

The Pirates got by in the first half running their normal offensive sets and trailed 27-23 heading into the break.  Both quarters ended with acrobatic shots over Sherman.  Chad Dulle banked in a sixteen footer at the end of the first and Levi Gleason pulled off an acrobatic right handed scoop shot around the Kenton big man heading into halftime.   BHS would adjust their offensive mindset in the second half.

Bluffton spread the floor in the second half pulling Sherman out near midcourt where he was rendered useless.  From there the Pirate guards beat their man one on one and finished at the rim, shooting 10/17 from the two point range in the half.  It was a great strategic move by Coach Todd Boblitt and it nearly worked for the victory.

Late in the third quarter Kenton pulled away on a 7-2 run and built a 40-31 lead heading into the fourth.  Bluffton cranked up the defensive pressure, and forced four consecutive turnovers to begin the fourth.  Tyler Neal canned a long ‘3’ from the top of the key to cap off an 8-0 Pirate run which cut the Wildcat lead to just one.  Cory Hilty tied up the game at 45-45 when he hit a 12 footer over Sherman with 2:55 left.  Kenton answered quickly, burying a ‘3’ from the top of the key.  The Pirates missed a ‘3’ on their next possession and Kenton began knocking down free throws as they ended the game on a 9-2 run.  KHS shot 9/10 from the stripe in the final stanza.

Individually Spencer Tuttle had a nice all around game as he scored 13 points on 5/7 shooting and nabbed 4 steals.  Levi Gleason played large scoring 8 points, grabbing 7 boards and blocking an astounding 6 shots on the evening.  Cory Hilty also scored 8 points.  Tyler Neal and Tyler Breidenbach both scored 7 and made a ‘3’.  Chad Dulle and Evan Skilliter each dropped in two to round out the box score.

Basketball (M): Shawnee 65 Bluffton 38

Published Date: 2009-01-04 23:38:38
Defending Western Buckeye League champion Shawnee stormed into Bluffton Saturday and rang in the new year their way, leveling Bluffton 65-38.  The outcame gave both teams a 5-2 record.  Tyler Neal (16) and Levi Gleason (10) led Bluffton in scoring.

From the onset, it was obvious why Shawnee is a favorite to repeat in the WBL.  The Indians had size, speed and experience going for them.  The game wasn’t a blowout from the beginning as Shawnee led just 17-12 after one quarter.  BHS was able to handle Shawnee’s defensive pressure but the Indians shot 8/10 from the field for the advantage.  Things would change in the second quarter however.

Shawnee opened the second with back to back threes and a 10-0 run to push the lead out to 27-12.  Neal picked up his third foul with 5:24 left in the half and the task of getting through Shawnee’s man to man full court pressure became a bit more daunting.  Spencer Tuttle (6 points), Zach Devier and Tyler Breidenbach (2 points) did a nice job handling the pressure but Shawnee kept up their offensive success and led 35-19 at halftime.

Levi Gleason opened the second half with two free throws followed by a pass from Cory Hilty (4 points) for another bucket and the Pirates were within 13 in what would become a trend for the remainder of the game.  BHS would trim the lead down to around ten but Shawnee pushed it back out to fifteen or sixteen.   After three quarters, Shawnee led 51-33.  In the fourth, a Spencer Tuttle free throw trimmed the deficit to 13 with 5:16 left.  Shawnee called timeout and promptly ended any thoughts of a Pirate comeback by going on a 14-0 run to end the game.

Bluffton gets another crack at the WBL hosting Kenton on Tuesday night.

Basketball (M): Pirate Boys Plunder Tourney Title

Published Date: 2008-12-29 00:35:12 | Updated: 2008-12-29 10:15:42
Cory Hilty

After a one year hiatus the traveling trophy awarded to the champion of the McDonald’s Holiday Tournament is back in Pirate Pete’s chest after Bluffton snuffed out Arlington 57-47 in the championship game.  Allen East defeated Cory Rawson 48-44 in overtime in the consolation game.

The Pirates enjoyed balanced scoring from Tyler Neal (17 points), Cory Hilty (16), Levi Gleason (12) and Spencer Tuttle (10) as they won their fifth straight game to move to 5-1.  Coach Todd Boblitt was pleased with his team’s attitude.  “We had a much better effort tonight.  I could tell our kids had a true desire to win our own tournament and make up for last year.”

Bluffton carried a 19-18 halftime lead into the locker room and using their man-trap defense extended the lead to 34-29 after three quarters.  BHS opened the fourth on a 9-3 run to open an 11 point lead with 5:25 left.  That’s when things got interesting.  The Pirates spread things out and let Tournament MVP Tyler Neal go to work one on one.  Neal, who had 9 fourth quarter points, hit back to back buckets in the lane.  On the other end, Arlington’s Damin Oman (23 points) was getting red hot himself and matched Neal shot for shot.  With both teams in the bonus, free throws rose to the forefront.  Bluffton shot just 9/19 from the line in the final stanza but it was more than enough for the ten point victory.

Spencer Tuttle and Cory Hilty joined Neal on the all tournament team.  Arlington’s Damin Oman and Kevin Rogers, Allen East’s Aaron Swaney and Cory Rawson’s John Erford were also honored.

Individual Statistics:
Tyler Neal:  17 points, 2 steals
Cory Hilty:  16 points, 7 rebounds
Levi Gleason:  12 points,  8 rebounds
Spencer Tuttle:  10 points, 6/8 free throws
Tyler Breidenbach:  2 points, 5 rebounds
